Weekend Workshop with Kofi Busia
Given our recent Sutra Discussion Group, I thought you may be interested in this:
Yoga Sutras: The Ancient Wisdom Behind the Practice
Dates/Times:
Saturday & Sunday, 1:00-4:00pm
June 25th – 26th, 2005
Yoga is a meditative discipline of liberation. For centuries this ancient and timeless wisdom of Yoga was passed on orally from teacher to student. In the second century BC a sage named Patanjali recorded these teachings in what is known as the Yoga Sutras. Kofi Busia – a master scholar and practitioner of these teachings – is coming to Avalon to share his knowledge, and give your practice direction and strength.
Each day will begin with a talk by Kofi which covers the intention for the class, and his deep interest in the Yoga Sutras. The discussion will turn to focus specifically on one or two sutras, the sutras will be chanted, and then Kofi will guide the class through a thoughtful series of asanas which build on the understanding gained from the sutras.
This workshop is suitable for early-intermediate to advanced students. Bringing a translated copy of the Yoga Sutras would be handy, but is not required.
Kofi Busia was born in Ghana, West Africa, and has lived in both his native country and the United Kingdom. He was introduced to yoga while a student at Oxford University, and immediately travelled to Pune to have long-term in-depth studies at the feet of his guru, Sri B.K.S. Iyengar. He began his teaching career while still a student at Oxford, and has taught professionally ever since. He was awarded his Advanced Teaching Certificate by B.K.S. Iyengar over 30 years ago and has taught all over the world, being one of the most recognizable and respected of teachers, and a regular teaching participant at many conventions and gatherings around the world. He is also the author of an original translation and commentary, direct from the Sanskrit, of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. He is particularly noted for his wide knowledge of Indian and Western philosophy which he weaves, using his notable story-telling skills and his keen sense of humor, into his classes. Kofi currently lives in California where he teaches both regular weekly classes, and intensive workshops and teacher trainings.
