Friday Discussion: Why is Pranayama hard?

Even though pranayama is “just” sitting and breathing, for 10-20 minutes, it often seems difficult to do compared to a 1.5 hour asana practice.

Merav had a theory as to why that is – asana, similar to exercise, releases dopamine which makes us feel good naturally. There is no such beneficial feedback loop with pranayama practice – in fact part of it is feeling uncomfortable with breath retention. That sounds as if it could be part of the answer.
